One could raise an argument among jazz insiders, that Dale Barlow is the world’s greatest living jazz saxophonist. You could site as evidence; his years in Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, years with pianist Cedar Walton, tours with  Sonny Stitt, Jackie Maclean, Billie Cobham, Benny Golson, Gil Evans, Kenny Barron… Dizzy Gillespie…  whew, he gets around. One of Australia's most accomplished and internationally recognised jazz artists, Dale was a member of legendary American groups The Cedar Walton Quartet, and Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, two of the greatest training grounds for young musicians in jazz history.

Widely recognised as an inspiring, virtuosic and original Tenor saxophonist/ composer, he is also an accomplished flautist/bass clarinettist/ arranger and pianist. As a composer he has written for large and small ensemble, film, theatre and television, and recorded extensively.

His credits include touring and recording with some of the all-time greats: Sonny Stitt, Chet Baker, Gil Evans, Jackie McLean, Billy Cobham, Curtis Fuller, Eddie Palmieri, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Golson, Lee Konitz, Sonny Stitt, Helen Merryl, Mulgrew Miller, Cindy Blackman, Ernie Watts, Eddie Henderson, Kenny Barron, Ray Drummond, Billy Higgins, Cedar Walton and, of course the original Jazz Messenger, Art Blakey.

Also known as "Baloo", Max is a great Sydney-based bass player. You may remember him from our first jazz night back in June when he swept us off our feet with Steve Brien & Di Bird (the latter are to return in November!) his personality and charisma shines through as he smiles and interacts with the crowd - a trait not always seen in bassists! He began his music studies at ANU and currently studies at the Conservatorium in Sydney.

Steve completed a masters degree in 2005 and holds a position on the jazz faculty of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music where he has been teaching since 1998. Steve is a desciple of the "Hal Galper -Forward Motion" school of teaching and offers lessons for intermediate to advanced students of all instruments.

Steve can take students of the Conservatorium (Highschool, tertiary, open Acadamy) at his room at the conservatorium or offers private lessons at his home studio in the inner city suburb of Newtown, for non-Con students. 

Considered a Bebop teaching specialist, Steve draws from a wide range of teaching and playing experience. His teachers have included: David Baker, John Schofield, Jack Wilkins, Dave Leibman and Hal Galper.
